Announcing our Partners: #3 Viki
Viki is a video streaming website headquartered in Singapore. It initially came to life in 2007 as a class project, aiming at using YouTube videos as a tool for language learning, between Stanford’s Razmig Hovaghimian and Harvard’s Changseong Ho and Jiwon Moon. Given the nationality of its cofounders but also the fact Razmig had been working for NBCUniversal in Japan for two years, the content catalogue was initially built upon Korean dramas, Japanese animes and NBCUniversal titles.
After a long beta phase of its software, Viki was made available to the general public in December 2010. The website now boasts a deep catalog of 5,000 hours of video content – from top Asian distributors, NBCUniversal, A+E Networks and BBC Worldwide -, a subscription base of 600,000 people and subtitles in 158 languages. The company even managed to sublicense some of its acquired contents (thanks to its fansubs), especially Asian dramas and Japanese animes, to other online and TV broadcasters such as Netflix, Hulu, Hong-Kong’s TVB, South Korea’s SBS, Japan’s Fuji TV and Russia’s Amedia.
In terms of our partnership with Viki, we have started to bring to you some of their exclusive competitions. Actually the first one is currently going on, so don’t miss the deadline: you can win the YSL lipstick that Jeon Ji-hyeon wore for her character of Cheon Song-yi in My Love from Another Star. But, we are still talking to them and we hope to be able to offer you more exclusive offers and news from them.
Viki are currently interested in developing their presence on the UK market, and therefore we will work closely with them to bring you the latest Korean dramas. Stay in touch and come back to check regularly what new exciting contents they have for you!
