French-Chinese original webseries Ex-Model reaches 25 million clicks on Youku Tudou
DaehanDrama is usually dedicated to anything related to Korean TV series.
However, in the growing landscape of online streaming worldwide, original productions for on demand platforms have become plenty and are making big waves. After Netflix met a resounding success with House of Cards, other VOD players have started investing in their own original programming. In the US first… and more recently in China! There is not currently any Korean webseries specifically produced for VOD platforms, so we will look at the Chinese case which is quite interesting.
Indeed, in November 2008, Youku Tudou, the leading Chinese on-demand platform, entered the original production space with webseries Hip Hop Office Quartet, which met an amazing 100 million views for its first season. It then followed with several other series such as Old Boys, On the Road and Miss Puff.
Confirming the success of that strategy, Youku just announced a massive push with the launch of 20 original series in 2014 only! Those include reality series Searching Divas, based on Korean reality show Running Man, and went over 10 million in less than two days.
Given its position as a newcomer but with a massive audience to please and surprise, Youku Tudou is able to take some freedom on the type of shows it chooses to fund. That’s how it came on board the first French-Chinese original comedy series, “Ex-Model” last year.
What’s special to that series is that it is shot in Paris by a French crew, including the writer-director Emmanuel Sapolsky, mostly in French language, but with Chinese actors, including its lead, Xin Wang – who co-wrote the script. To the producers’ surprise, Youku gave them a lot of leeway.
The topic of the webseries is certainly appealing to the Chinese audience, which has facilitated the process. Xin Wang plays a former Chinese top model who is trying to make a career change and pursue new opportunities in contemporary Paris. Far from being easy, as much as she tries, she gets into more trouble.
Not a joke, the webseries premiered on April 1, and after less than 3 months, has already gathered 25 million clicks. There is not any distribution beyond China confirmed yet, but we hope it gets to us.
