Korean actors in upcoming Netflix series ‘Marco Polo’, premieres on Dec. 12
As it was confirmed earlier this month, actress Claudia Soo-hyun Kim will feature in the upcoming blockbuster series for Netflix, produced by indie studio The Weinstein Company. But she turns out not to be the only Korean talent in Marco Polo. Indeed, Park Woon-young, a seasoned Korean-American actor, known for his appearances in The Shield (2003) and Arrested Development (2013), received a credit as ‘Nima’. More precisions have also been given on Claudia’s character: she was cast as ‘Khutulun’, the niece of Khubilai Khan (played by actor Benedict Wong).
The series was shot in Italy, Kazakhstan and Malaysia, and it seems Claudia Kim was only needed for the scenes at the Pinewood Studios in Malaysia – where she flew directly from London in July after ending her work on the upcoming Avengers’ movie sequel. She probably got to love afternoon tea in the UK as she was enjoying it in Singapore as well (left picture). The pilot episode was directed by the Norwegian duo Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (known for the great Norwegian epic movie Kon-Tiki and who will direct the new Pirates of Caribbeans movie). Further episodes were led by directors experienced on the only TV series with a higher budget than Marco Polo: HBO’s Game of Thrones. Indeed, the Italian adventurer-led series cost $90 million to produce!
All in all, Marco Polo is an incredible opportunity for Kim Soo-hyun and Park Woon-young for a career boost with a blockbuster series which would be difficult to access in the regular U.S. studio system. They will surely receive many offers after their short (1 episode each) but widely viewed appearances. Very unusual and amazing as well for a Singaporean actress, Oon Shu An, to get the lead role.
Marco Polo with premiere on Netflix, in all the countries where it is currently available, on December 12. In the meantime, have a look at the trailer and show support!
