Female Faces

Female Faces

Chased by an invisible threat, a young woman is running for her life in a desolate space barren of life until her lungs begin to hurt. She stops and catches her breath. Out of nowhere, a beam of light, like a prison yard searchlight, engulfs her, and in its brightness, she freezes. Bewildered, she slowly turns and faces away only to be met by another beam shone from another direction. And then another. With every fleeing step, a beam of light is right there to meet her, gradually surrounding her in a whirling stroboscopic frenzy. This sufocating exposure to the light drives her into a series of convulsions during which her appearance shifts, her face morphs into many; momentarily turning into different women of disparate cultures, age groups, identities. Unable to sustain the torment, she kneels and at the last moments she yells out a ferocious scream which shatters the lightbulbs, killing the light and with it, dismantling her paralysing fear.

The Water Dancers

The Water Dancers

Dragonflies are the sentinels of the Earth. Being among the oldest creatures on our planet, they have lived in harmony with the indigenous plants and animals of Earth’s bountiful landscapes for 300 million years. Humans threatened that harmony. Now, South Africa's scientists are turning back to nature’s messenger, the dragonfly, for a new way forward in conservation, using a system of connected corridors, called Ecological Networks. The Water Dancers, a name from the Zulu Jigamanzi, meaning 'dancing on water,' invites you into the precious world of the small things to discover how their sensitive nature can help us design a passage into the future.

Man Up!

Man Up!

South Africa is a violent country with some of the highest levels of gender-based violence in the world. Men are the primary perpetrators of such violence. Man Up! offers a critical look at manhood in South Africa by unpacking the realities of men’s life experiences in order to make sense of their violence. The film follows the stories of Sikhangele Mabulu and Monwabisi Mbetane as they reflect on their childhood socialisation that made violence an acceptable form of male expression. Man Up! suggests that it is the narrow construction of masculinity that makes powerless men resort to violence as a means of asserting their manhood. Through the work of the NGO Sonke Gender Justice, the film looks at the powerful role men can play in bringing about change within their homes and communities to lead more gender equitable and fulfilling lives.
